4.6 Live boot black screen

cat /var/log/boot.log ends with 'Starting Light Display Manager…

Live mode boots to black screen with white cursor at top left. Volume keys work (can hear sound), so I know the system booted but I can’t display anything.

CTR ALT F# brings up a TTY. Had same issue on install, had to apt hold the kernel. Possibly kernel issue? I’d like to solve it instead of holding the kernel if possible.
