HDMI output not working

Hi,

My HDMI output is not working, the external screen is not detected at all.
I have a Razer Blade 2016, with a GTX 1060 and an Intel graphic integrated.
I suppose that the HDMI port is handled only by the Nvidia graphic card, which doesn’t appear to work.

I’ve installed the nvidia-driver when I installed Parrot, which seems to work (well, except for HDMI output).
I don’t really know how graphic cards are supposed to work on linux distros, there is a lot of drivers so I wasn’t sure of which I had to install. So any help would be appreciated.

Here is some infos that could help:

$ grep "X Driver" /var/log/Xorg.0.log
[ 5.879] (II) NVIDIA dlloader X Driver 390.87 Tue Aug 21 15:44:49 PDT 2018

$ xrandr --listproviders
Providers: number : 1
Provider 0: id: 0x45 cap: 0xf, Source Output, Sink Output, Source Offload, Sink Offload crtcs: 3 outputs: 3 associated providers: 0 name:modesetting
  • The HDMI output works fine on windows
  • HDMI is the only video output I have on my computer.

I don’t really need the Nvidia graphic card to work, I use it only on Windows to play. So if there is a way to disable it and allow HDMI output to work in some way, it will be great.

Thanks !

What version of Parrot are you running? Parrot Security 4.4

What method did you use to install Parrot? Debian Standard

Configured to multiboot with other systems? Yes, with windows

Up, I’m still having this issue…
I followed this https://www.parrotsec.org/docs/info/gpu-drivers/ to install the nouveau driver, I was hoping that the HDMI port was handled only by the graphic card and that the driver would have solved the problem, but it didn’t.

Unfortunately I’m not sure if you can “ignore” nvidia card. There are some hard approaches but I suggest you trying to install drivers again.

Try to install bumblebee with nvidia driver (nouveau barely works) Tuto install of bumblebee and drivers and try out this approach Tuto install of bumblebee and drivers.

I have connected external monitor several times, and everything works with my GTX1050 and intel card.

Also install OpenCL as mentioned here: Tuto install of bumblebee and drivers.

Thanks a lot for your answer!
I tried everything you said, I had a small issue with my system not booting up after installing the nvidia driver and rebooting. The Parrot start screen showed up, then I stayed stuck on a non-blinking cursor on the top left of the screen. Eventually, even if I don’t know how it happened, some logs showed up with one saying “Failed to start Nvidia Persistence Daemon”.
As I did once, I tried to boot the system with the acpi=off option and it worked, but I don’t know if this will have some other effects, neither why I had to do that… But I now need to do it every time to make the system start.
And bad luck, my hdmi port is still not working.
Thanks for your help anyway!

Can you please try to boot in the system, switch to console and try to start up startx manually, so we can spot errors if any?

Also please provide the output of /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

I can’t enter any command when I boot in normal mode, the console just shows some boot log, including the “Failed to start Nvidia Persistence Daemon”, and then get stuck, no keyboard shortcut works after that and I can’t enter anything before (at least I didn’t find a way to do it).
When booting in acpi=off mode, I was able to execute startx which worked as expected, without errors.
Here is the output of the /var/log/Xorg.0.log :

Thanks again!

I know that may sound stupid, but I need to make sure:

  • Have you installed bumblebee?
  • Have you done this:

Append next nvidia configuration file:

sudo nano /etc/bumblebee/xorg.conf.nvidia

And at the end of the file insert next content:

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Default Screen"
    Device "DiscreteNvidia"
EndSection

Yes of course, both are already done since you told me to.

Could you tell me how did you install the nvidia drivers? You told that they worked, though I can’t understand why they don’t work now.

There is a chance your laptop model has an ACPI table which linux can’t recognize and that may be the reason of your booting disability.

Though you can also try to boot to rescue mode without no parameters, and try to run startx from root shell (yes I do know it’s bad to start X11 from root, but we have to get any kind of logs if it’s a problem of X11).

Send the xorg.0.log as I mentioned before.

If that doesn’t make a change I suggest you trying to purge drivers and start off again. Believe me that can make a difference.

Though I tried to search any reveleant problems with razor blade 2016 and acpi and couldn’t find anything similar.

I don’t remember how I installed them in the first place, I tried a lot of things since I installed parrot to make them work, even reinstalled parrot a couple of times, so I can’t be sure of how I did it on this one…
Of course after your answer, I did exactly what was told on the link you gave me : Tuto install of bumblebee and drivers

I booted in recovery mode, opened a terminal and sudo startx which worked fine.
Here is the xorg.0.log after that :

Thanks a lot for the time you spent helping me!
If the problem remains, does an apt-get purge nvidia-driver bumblebee-nvidia primus is enought or too much?

Maybe it can’t recognize BusID.

Run lspci | grep 3D and find out nvidia card bus. I.e. my bus is:
01:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GP107M [GeForce GTX 1050 Mobile] (rev ff)

Whatever you get, uncomment 19 line in /etc/bumblebee/xorg.conf.nvidia and set correct BusID.

Well, I get nothing, there is no “3D” in the output of lspci. Here is the full output:

Hm. Look’s like linux can’t recognize your intel card. You need to find a driver and install it. That’s why your laptop freezes on boot, it turns off NVIDIA and can’t find a device to use for desktop draw.

Thanks!
But there is some intel graphics entries in the lspci output, so linux knows my intel graphic card no?
I’ve been searching for intel driver, the thing that I found the most is xserver-xorg-video-intel, which is already installed.
I’m still searching for another one.

Try i915 intel kernel module

It seems that it’s already installed:

$ lsmod | grep 'i915'
i915 1728512 3
i2c_algo_bit 16384 1 i915
drm_kms_helper 204800 1 i915
drm 483328 4 drm_kms_helper,i915
video 45056 1 i915

Hmm, not sure if this was done already but have you checked the OEM info on whether the integrated graphics can be enabled and/or that it is in the UEFI/bios. Some machines arent able to switch gpu

I don’t see anything related to this in the bios. Anyway, this machine can switch GPU, it does it on Windows (the HDMI output works fine on it). It just don’t work on Parrot.

Is the problem still present?
