So, I downloaded, installed, got a 4.14 kernel. Installed the VirtualBoxGuestAdditionsWithThe OddCapitalTo AnnoyYou and all was good. The we got an update, with a 4.16.0- SomethingParrot Compiled…
That didn’t work. Black screen with a blinking cursor.
Go back to the GRUB menu and boot from an older kernel, yes, that works, but it’s unsatisfactory.
First effort here to ask what I did wrong, gave a very brief reference to what modules I’d included… (sigh) Ok.
The last time I tried to compile a kernel, was in 1999, and I tried for 5 days & failed. It was a Redhat kernel so maybe that had something to do with it.

Also requires this -
Do note in particular, this bit-
cp /boot/config-$(uname -r) .config
make menuconfig
sudo make -j 4 && sudo make modules_install -j 4 && sudo make install -j 4
My Linux kernel is now -
4.16.9 x86_64
I have not installed any VirtualBox additions, I didn’t have to. I have full screen and the thing seems to be working perfectly.
I am extremely pleased with myself - I haven’t tried to do this in almost 20 years and the last time I tried it, I failed miserably.
Mike - kneedragon.
