KDE missing fuctionality after update

Briefly describe your issue below:

I’ve been using parrot for a number of months now. After the latest update, KDE’s missing some functionality. I am using Latte-Dock 0.9.2-1 if that’s relevant.

I know this is a pretty minor issue, but I haven’t been able to troubleshoot this yet.

  • Search items don’t appear
    • Partial fix with reenabling balooctl, but that only indexes files
  • System tray (and other widgets) don’t appear

I’m hoping someone more experienced with KDE can help.

What version of Parrot are you running? (include version (e.g. 4.6), edition(e.g. Home//KDE/OVA, etc.), and architecture (currently we only support amd64)

Parrot Security 4.7

Output from uname -a

Linux workstation 5.2.0-2parrot1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 5.2.9-2parrot1 (2019-08-25) x86_64 GNU/Linux

What method did you use to install Parrot? (Debian Standard / Debian GTK / parrot-experimental)

Debian Standard

Configured to multiboot with other systems? (yes / no)

Yes

I’m having the exact same problem on two different machines. KDE.

Same here 2 different computers, same effect.

I’ve now noticed other minor issues.

  • Right click on desktop doesn’t work
  • Unable to change desktop wallpaper
  • Sound not working without sound widget, Networks not working without network widget, etc.
  • Search not finding applications (after partial baloo fix)

Additionally, I tried following all the suggestions here, but nothing worked. The normal KDE panels show up, but no widgets.

Just want to make sure we’re all having the same problem

  1. Right click on desktop doesn’t work
    -Me too
  2. Unable to change desktop wallpaper
-Since I cant right click, not sure how else to change wallpaper.
  3. Sound not working without sound widget, Networks not working without network widget, etc.
-No issues with sound, but have to change volume through system settings. I did have network connection fail, after update, then restart noticed lost system tray. Network did connect OK, wlan.
  4. Search not finding applications (after partial baloo fix)
-Search is broken for me too

Another odd thing I just noticed, I clicked on the extreme left top of my screen and one of my apps that normally resides in the system tray opened (protonmail bridge). My system tray I have configured to sit at the top rightish.

Having the same issue!

@mrb1ue A temporary solution for your sound is going through System Settings -> Multimedia -> Audio Volume. Also you can change wallpaper by editing ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc

So same pattern:

  1. Right click doesn’t work on taskbar/launcher/desktop.
  2. Widgets unavailable
  3. Apps not showing on taskbar
  4. Search doesn’t consider apps

I would also add that launching the plasmashell shows conversion errors but I wouldn’t say much for now. Noting that reverting to default plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc won’t fix anything.

traced the issue to a gnome bug, need to let the devs know about the issue, kali linux had the same issue with the most recent release, they have a fix for it (kali only) plasmaparrot is my daily driver so i freaked out and rolled back a few times but it ended up the same after the update, thats when i went and looked into the other distros and found the origin of the issue

Gnome bug? That’s odd.

Do you know which specific package(s) are problematic? I don’t have a full backup of my system (I really should).

Any developer comments on a patch yet?

Same issues here. Thankful for this thread growing to a solution. And really cool to see people working together.
I too tried to removing plasma desktop-appletsrc per some KDE boards I searched. Nothing has worked for me otherwise.

its specific to gnome desktop + gtk parts of the OS, not sure if the devs have a fix ready for it yet, afiak.

:o people didnt use to work together here? i thought that was common board etiquette LOL

Hi everyone! We are very sorry for your issue. We are tracking this problem and we will fix as soon as possible.

Thanks for the response. Hoping for a quick fix.

In the future, is there a specific bug reporting thread we can post to? Or is support the goto?

It should be in support with full information so we can track it easier

For anybody track the issue in this topic only: the patch should be on stable repo soon.
