FIRST 'eh.

Figured I'd give my 'Hello Kanadaland', as the first topic in the maple syrup part of this forum.

After being forced to switch to Windows 7 from Linux a few years ago for work...I have now decided that Microsoft has no-clue-nor-cares anymore, and I totally distrust them. Microsoft is in total meltdown with recent cyber weapon leaks, and their new ridiculous (and LATE) OSX-like Monthly Rollup scheme. I was originally going to use FreeBSD, or the more user-friendly TrueOS/PC-BSD; yet I've finally decided on Parrot Sec OS as my main operating system for my primary AMD64 lap warmer. It works *GREAT*, and much faster than having three anti-viruses, a special firewall, I.D.S., and countless security programs running at the SAME TIME I am trying to work/play. (Which all can fail under the weight of Windows' ZeroDays.)

I just wanted to thank and congratulate the team on such a quality distro. Unlike Kali Linux for example; Parrot actually is a fully usable, personal and private operating system... though with much of the same tools to experiment/train with. I am actually fairly impressed that (also unlike Kali) Parrot is, as far as usability goes almost on the same level as Ubuntu MATE; though without the annoying attempts to push users AWAY from the terminal.

That said there is an issue with Firewalls (only if you want this distro as your main operating system), sure if you are running a home box just get a second system running pfSense. I still have to troubleshoot ufw's persistence after reboot. Naturally firewalls are NOT A PROBLEM to those who need a temp OS for testing; knowing they will format the drive sooner than later. The one thing that REALLY sold me was it's compatibility with Raspberry Pi. This is important since I'll be abandoning both Intel and AMD in the distant future, for homebrewed ARM clusters.

An install of Opera web browser (which includes FREE SurfEasy VPN) handles most minor privacy issues, though TOR is by it's nature best run on a live Tails OS (if it's just browsing/communicating). I can see how useful Parrot could be with both the included tools and "Anon Mode".

All in all, just wanted to give my thumbs up to the team that put this fine Distro together; lets all ride out Microsoft's apocalypse together 'eh.!

Re: FIRST 'eh.

Hello/Bonjour Robert,

Nice to see a fellow Canadian here. I have been used ParrotOs for a few weeks and like you, I am very impressed of the capabilities as main operating system. Still trying some of the tools installed (I  was looking the forensic tools mainly) but so far, everything has worked just fine.

I am a bit curious about your mention of Raspberry Pi compatibility.  What exactly do you mean?  I have been using SHH to interact with my Pi's (and their sensors)  and so far things are going well.  Now I am wondering if there is a better level of interaction.

Cheers!

Re: FIRST 'eh.

Howdy Oscar,

I was not expecting a reply, and was busy for a bit. Still have not had time to play with the load of tools; let alone RTFM/FAQs on 'em.

As far as using this OS on Pi boards, go to the download link:

https://www.parrotsec.org/download.fx

And select Embedded Devices and IoT at the bottom. I do not yet own a Pi, so I am no help. Though a quick Google search brings up this short intro video; maybe it will help you:

Have a good one, 'eh!

Hey robert & Oscar, and welcome to the forums! Glad to see some more Canucks present in the community.

Feel free to PM me or reach out on Telegram so we can get a group set up there, then we can talk about reaching out to more Canadians and hosting events down the road.

@Paaltomo,

Not sure how much use I can be here in Toronto, I'm a total n00b when it comes to Pen Testing; was always more of a phone phreak back in the day. Not much for real life meets and cons, though keep me updated. Right now, I just plan on studying the training at https://stackskills.com and https://www.cybrary.it to upgrade my skills; maybe get a cert or two under my belt. 2017 has just been WAYYY to much of an interesting year to not try and get back into the cyber game, mainly defensive... it's been one crazy year for anyone paying attn.

Our forums aren't cool enough for @ mentions yet heh

No need to be l33t hax to help - you're free to do whatever you want if there's something you can think of: making Parrot memes and propaganda, giving your reviews from your own experience with the platform on distrowatch and such, dressing up as a pirate in public with a parrot on your shoulder, anything within your interests could lend support.

I'm still working on events and so far there hasn't been much interest from the forums, but from elsewhere there's handful of others around the GTA who have said they might attend.

Other than that, one of the things I'd like to do is set up a Canadian mirror somewhere but haven't got into planning it just yet.
