First post? My inquiry about boarder control and encrypted disk.

Greetings.

I am highly concern about data privacy and encrypted my entire HDD.  I have my original Windows disk image backed up in case of recovery, but with that I started wondering.

I often go across US boarder and also travel to other countries with my laptop.  Now, that I have this encrypted HDD in my laptop what should I expect at boarders now-a-days and insights regarding what kind of options are available in term of preparing my laptop would be a great help.

Would it be okay if someone can share their experience with similar issue?  I have no problem if the boarder control copies my entire disk since it's encrypted with 14 mixed digit password, but will that work as an alternative to providing my password?  Or should I just simply "dd" my HDD every time I plan to travel internationally?

If this post is in an inappropriate topic, let me know. =)

US boardlines need the hd not encrypted. yep, you should give a copy of the hd every time you have to travel. but it's ridicolous

I guess it's gonna be "dd" a night b4 travelling from now on for a while...

Just out of curiosity .. if it's like that with computer... does also imply I'm expected to surrender any censored documents for a photocopy, too?

Seems like the best way to travel these days is to travel wearing nothing but swim suite with only passport/ticket around ur neck. =/

There is an excellent article that explains how to safely pass the Chinese border while keeping everything digital secure. I will add the link, once I find it again.

Re: First post? My inquiry about boarder control and encrypted disk.

what about installing 2 operating systems? one encrypted and another one completely clear that starts automatically at boot? would it convince the border officers to not waste time on it or do they have to make a copy anyways even if it does not seem to be encrypted?
