Do you mean replace Android OS on an android tablet/netbook/phone ?
It can be done, but it’s not very easy,
I suggest you search Instal Linux on an android tablet, and read a couple of different articles
Yes, this is what i mean. Because i supose that it is impossible to have both in the same phone
No it is possible to have Linux and android in a multi-boot set up, but the performance will depend on what resources the old Android phone has,
Disclaimer
This is not something I personally have tried, and I am not sure This distribution would work, there are around 8 or so linux distributions designed to replace Android OS
