Maybe I understand something wrong but your user is not in the sudoers group?
If yes login password and sudo password are the same.
if no … try this
another way is also possible:
sudo su
with your login password makes you root
then
passwd
and you can change the root password

sudo password should ask for your password ( it is not su root which requires root password)
