cannot build kernel, cannot install build dependencies

– Please Write here your help request –

I am attempting to build a custom configured kernel for my system to enable some features which I need, and maybe squeeze a bit more performance out of this system.

I tried to simply build the kernel after configuration, but I get an error (obviously because I apparently didn’t install the build dependencies):

$make -j8 deb-pkg
  GEN debian
error: creating source package requires git repository
make[2]: *** [scripts/Makefile.package:38: check-git] Error 1

so, I try to run the following command to fix this:

sudo apt build-dep linux

and I get this:

$sudo apt build-dep linux

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 sphinx-common : Depends: libjs-sphinxdoc (= 5.3.0-4) but 5.3.0-7 is to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

of course, it doesn’t tell me which packages are held or causing problems. it also doesn’t help that the depends is set to = instead of >= so it has to be the EXACT version. Since there’s not a version of sphinx-common that will work with libjs-sphinxdoc 5.3.0-7 in the repository, it seem that kernel building on the latest version of parrot OS is not possible. Maybe there’s a solution buried somewhere, but I can’t find it or get around this dependency error. I don’t believe that the kernel version I’m trying to compile is in error here.

Maybe the parrot devs can fix the repositories to make the sudo build-dep linux command to actually work as needed for kernel building? or is there an alternative way to build a kernel under parrot that’s not “standard” or whatever? I can’t find any guides on the parrot website regarding kernel building, so I am relying on generalized information or guides from other distros like ubuntu. Regardless, at least the common “universal” commands should work under parrot.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • ParrotOS iso in use:
n/a, not a live CD but already installed system

  • Application used for flashing the iso:

balena-etcher, just like the guide says to use

  • Logs/Terminal output (use pastebin or similar services):

see above

  • Screenshots:

I faced kernel update issues so removed it  packages who was causing problems
I know I can’t compile kernel in my system because of old version dependency package issue
