Hardware information

- Lenovo ThinkPad T431S
- Display: Intel 3rd gen rev 09

- Did you try searching info about this issue on search engine? Didn't find anything specific
  1. How did you get this error? Are there any steps to procedure it?
    1. I ran Parrot Live
    2. Live loads but there are black dashes (-) “staircases” across the laptop’s monitor. Pattern changes if I change resolution and can make all dashes in a vertical column with lower resolutions.
    3. Dashes do not appear in screen captures, just on display
    4. Attaching external monitor by display port makes dashes go away, removing monitor makes them reappear

I first experienced this display issue with Kali after upgrading my previous version to the January 2020 rolling update last year. Parrot did the same behavior, wiping and reinstalling the OS with the latest ISO did not make a difference. Ubuntu, Mint and Windows do not have the same issue, so it is not a problem physically with the hardware, but I cannot figure out how to make these lines/dashes go away without being attached to an external monitor, which beats the purpose of being a laptop. Any assistance is appreciated.

Please let me know if you need anything else. I can also take and link pics if it helps describe what I am experiencing.

As far as I can tell, everything looks OK. (I’m learning Linux for a certification, so am not a Guru yet.) Do you have the following 4 firmware packages installed?

firmware

Yes, they are all installed. I appreciate your assistance, so far every other forum that I’ve posted in has been met with crickets.

I’ve included images of what I’m seeing on my screen. I can change the pattern if I change the resolution and can make them go away entirely if I attach an external monitor by displayport, but whats the point of a laptop if you have to plug into an external monitor to use it?

I spent a bit of time trying to find anyone else also experiencing horizontal dashes on laptop monitor. Nearly everything is about “screen tearing” which is not what you are experiencing. Strange that it goes away on the laptop screen when you plug in an external monitor.
