Playback of Commercial DVDs

OK… I’ve been using Parrot for a bit now, I never did like dual booting, so I bought a HD caddy for my Dell Precision, and now I have a dedicated Samsung 500GB SSD for W10, W7, and ParrotOS Security version 6.2.

Dell M4600 with 3.6GHz i7, 32GB RAM, and on any of the mentioned SSDs, this thing is still rocket-ship fast for my needs. Slot-load Pioneer DVD ROM/burner for optical, with nVidia Optimus turned off. Even with Optimus turned on, there isn’t any change in my issue.

Whether booting from the OS SSD or from fresh-burned, bootable 32GB USB 3.0 thumb drive, i cannot play commercial (bought, pre-recorded) DVDs. Oddly though, it’s not just playback. I can’t extract the files, rip the media… nothing. Handbrake and VLC simply cannot get to the VOB files. They are all THERE, I can open and browse the media, but whenever I go to play the disc, or extract the files, whether directly to HD or extract/convert on-the-fly, no love. I’ve updated the DeCSS and DeCSS2

I’ve tried DOZENS of applications, more than I can remember to list. Windows (as I recall) plays DVDs through VLC, as well as extracts media using DVDDecrypter, so I do not think it’s a hardware compatibility issue.

I’ve never seen the system crash, hook, hang… nothing. The system just will not play DVDs. I am not certain where I might find logs, so if anyone needs assistance there, I’ll be happy to post any information you might need.

Parrot version in use: 6.2 lorikeet
Kernel version: 6.1.0-1parrot1-amd64

Any assistance would be appreciated!

Make sure you have enabled DRM

How do I do that? I can’t find any information on it… :slightly_smiling_face:

…as mentioned, I’ve installed VLC, as well as installed DeCSS, DeCSS2 and libdvdcss.

You can install drm this way (it might already be there? (haven’t checked)

sudo apt install libdrm2 -y

No love, Fred. That package already exists.

perhaps needs this too;

This is old so change ‘stretch’ to bookworm in the commands, otherwise the same;
